About Bluebell House B&B

The decision took weeks.  Having gutted and rebuilt the house to a very high standard, Aiden & Kathleen wanted to provide comfortable accommodation in this very beautiful remote part of North Leitrim.  Choosing tiles and fittings was easy; they should be attractive and practical.  Paint colours, no problem, they would be soft and welcoming.  But what name would they give their home?
With the stunning view of Benbo Mountains and O’Donnell’s rock maximised by the expanse of large windows in the dining/sitting area, it would have seemed obvious;   to include forests, lakes or valleys which make Leitrim as special as it is were also considered.  But it was the laneway of Bluebells which once ran along the side of their home each April that won their hearts and so the Meehan’s were open to receive guests to their home.
The Bluebell flower is quite symbolic in terms of a holiday. The stem might represent central base, i.e. Bluebell House which is situated just a 5 minute walk from Manorhamilton, a large market town on the N16. Each bell head might represent the surrounding counties: Sligo; Donegal; Fermanagh; Cavan; Longford and Roscommon all offering their own variety of activities, places to visit, and entertainment.
On a more local level in Lovely Leitrim, the Glencar Waterfall is one of the major attractions to this area, just after a heavy rain shower is the best time to witness this 50ft cascade. The waterfall is located in Glencar Forest where WB Yeats was inspired to write his poem ‘The Stolen Child’.  Cycling is a wonderful way to see this corner of the country and the Kingfisher Trail or North West Trails both take you to the Manorhamilton area and the beds at Blue Bell House are most welcoming at the end of a physical day.  Best of all is the substantial Bluebell Breakfast which will renew and replenish active guests for another day ahead.
Other outdoor pursuits available in the area are Hill Walking which includes The Leitrim Way a route that runs from Manorhamilton to Drumshambo. Fishing is available in Sandy Lough or Melvin Lough and Aiden and Kathleen will only be too happy in providing information on this recreation. In fact they have gathered information on practically everything available in the area and it is available for guests to peruse during their stay.  The more cultural guest at Bluebell could enjoy a visit to Manorhamilton Castle and Visitor Centre; the Creevylea Abbey in Dromahair or the imposing Parkes Castle on the shores of Lough Gill. An evening’s entertainment at the Glens Arts Centre which is located in a former Church in Manorhamilton would be the perfect end to a perfect day.
Though evening meals are not served at Bluebell House, there are a great variety of Restaurants within a 12 mile radius. The best known of these Restaurants has to be McNeans Bistro, home kitchen to Ireland’s favourite Chef, Nevin Maguire.    Another string to Aiden and Kathleen’s bow is that they often have guests seeking information on family who may have lived in the area.  Genealogy is an area of interest to Kathleen and she will assist where possible in finding relevant information and since Aiden has lived in the area all his life sometimes she doesn’t have to go too far!!
